Detection
Fire detection is split into two main sections, Smoke and Heat. Smoke detectors are the more common and more effective detection systems, but unsuited to certain environments in which false alarms are likely, such as a kitchen. Heat detectors are much less prone to false alarms but are not designed to catch fires at the earliest opportunity.

Suppression
Commercial and industrial fire suppression is an expensive, complex and hi-tech business, but there is a growing belief in residential fire suppression systems such as sprinklers. Such systems can limit a fire and even extinguish it automatically, meaning less danger to all concerned and minimal damage to property.

Extinguishing
Plenty of basic options exist for first line fire fighting, from fire blankets to extinguishers in a range of types and sizes.
