Here is an example of a 4 zone fire alarm. Depending in which zone the fire starts the respective indicator will light up.
Here is a 32 zone alarm, same principle as the 4 zone except more zones.
This alarm can pinpoint the source of the fire to one of 255 zones, with 255 LED's for indicators. Each heat detector can be mapped to a zone so in a small building you could easily pinpoint the fire to a particular room.

It is an analogue addressable automatic fire alarm system designed for small to medium sized building applications having up to 396 addressable smoke and heat detectors plus up 396 manual callpoints (MCPs).

Single Zone AlarmSingle Zone - Single zone fire alarm circuit diagram and description. This contrasts with a multiple zone alarm where there are two or more zones. A single zone alarm has only one zone.
